If you have a lot of old printed photographs and you want to immortalize them by turning them into a digital form, we have some advice you might find helpful. Every family has at least a couple of photo albums filled with great memories and unforgettable moments. However, because most of these photos were printed on special paper, they tend to deteriorate as the years pass. Some photos get coffee stains, other ones get ripped by children, but most of them perish at some point. That’s why it’s important to transfer them into a digital form and stop worrying about the overall condition of your beloved memories. We have some advice that you might find useful if you ever thought about this.
Try with a regular scanner
This is one of the simplest and most common ways to transmogrify your pictures into a digital form. Before you get started, it’s crucial you make sure you’ve cleaned both your photos and your scanner. Try not to leave any residue or dust that could jeopardize and compromise the results. Organizing your photos is also important.
It doesn’t matter in which way you’re planning to organize them, whether it’s by date, relevance, event, just make sure you do organize them. It’s going to be much easier for you to find a particular picture later on your PC. It all depends on the amount of photos you have, but regardless; you must scan them in a particular order. When you get that out of your way, it’s time to start scanning. Here is some general advice about scanning photographs:
- Make sure you scan multiple photos at once. Average-sized scanners can scan up to four pictures at once.
- Resolution is crucial. Choose a resolution of at least 300dpi up to 600dpi.
- Most scanners have a lot of editing options by default. Use this possibility to your advantage and edit your pictures while scanning.
Your phone might be of use
An application called PhotoScan was recently published by Google for Android devices with a specific purpose of scanning old photos. Needless to say, you will have to use a phone with a high-quality camera if you want to achieve impressive results.
The app works on a pretty simple principle. It takes a few pictures of your old photo and uses a piece of software which removes impurities, light reflections, and so on. After processing the picture, it presents the final product (which is pretty cool, to say the least.).
Also, every advice from the previous tip applies here as well. So, adjust the resolution, wipe off the dust, and organize your photos!
You can always give it to someone else
If you’re not prone to DIY projects, you can always hire someone else to do this for you. You might think these services are expensive or even non-existent. However, the reality is different. There are many stores offering scanning services for a reasonable price.
